Paratroopers die as Army truck plunges from bridge

A canvas-covered Army truck careened off a bridge at Fort Campbell and landed upside down in a rocky creek bed, killing 14 paratroopers and injuring nine others. The 327th Airborne Infantry from the Screaming Eagle division were returning from field training when the 2-ton truck hit the bridge rail and plunged 20 feet. Two helicopters evacuated victims to the base hospital as a board of inquiry opened into the worst accident on the post. Survivors estimated 40 to 45 mph, above the 25 mph limit, with investigators pending an official report.

City Council To Meet Monday On Water Works Bonds

Monroe city officials call a Monday meeting at city hall to discuss a proposed special election authorizing revenue bonds for improvements and extensions to the water works and electric plants and systems. The bond election requires approval from the state bond and tax board.
