Senate Judiciary Panel Approves Anti-Lynching Bill

Southern opponents pledged to fight it to the bitter end as Republicans place it high on their priority list. The bill would impose criminal and civil penalties on lynch mobs, with supporters citing federal action while opponents say existing laws suffice. Eastland vowed to defeat the measure by any means, declaring the bill would humiliate the south.
