John Bunyan Freed After Twelve Years in Bedford Jail
The 1672 release of John Bunyan from Bedford jail ends a long confinement during which he wrote and deepened his religious beliefs. Born near Bedford in 1628, Bunyan’s early life was rough and obscure, but his wife’s piety spurred a personal reformation and his rise as a Baptist preacher. His imprisonment began after the Restoration when he refused to conform to official church forms, and he famously said if released he would preach again the next day.
