Southeast Area Boom Conditions Strain Economy
The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta reports that boom conditions strained the Sixth District economy in April and May. Labor shortages, higher Social Security taxes and income tax withholdings, higher mortgage costs, and tighter lending reduced consumer spending and residential construction. Unemployment hit 1.6 percent, nonfarm payrolls rose 25,000, and district cash receipts and livestock prices remained strong despite weaker credit and housing markets.
