Westbrook Pegler visits Chicago factory of O D Jennings a leading slot machine maker. The interview notes strikes among workers at West Lakes Street plant and Jennings fears Congress may ban interstate shipment. Jennings cites Navy E awards from war work radar and radio, and says his slots offer about 90 percent payback to players.
Lake Success June 12. Russia and satellites boycotted a United Nations conference on technical assistance to backward areas. The Soviet bloc refused seats at the oval table and had previously withdrawn from 29 UN organs since January 10 in protest of Chinese Nationalists participation. US expected to lead contributions, with Britain and other nations also offering funds. Russia shown as unlikely to contribute. 77 nations invited for an 18 month effort estimated at 20 million dollars. Lie’s peace plan calls for universal participation.
Wolfeboro New Hampshire June 12 The head of the state board of registration in medicine presumes the five member body will reinstate Dr Hermann N Sander. Board president Dr J Paul Dye said he believes license to practice will be restored within days after he applies for reinstatement. The board revoked the Candia physicians license in April after he was acquitted of murder in the death of a cancer patient. The board said he could apply for reinstatement on June 19. Attorney Ralph E Langdell said the application will be filed before June 19 to hasten consideration. Dr Sander declined comment. The state charged at trial that he killed Mrs Abbie C Borreto by injecting air into her veins as she lay near death from cancer. The defense admitted air injections but contended the woman already was dead. Dye said the implication was obvious and the board agreed he should be suspended and seek reinstatement later. He added the case required disciplinary action and that he thinks everything will be all right. Dye is unsure if he will vote on the reinstatement. he votes only in a tie. The board opposes euthanasia or mercy killing and other members emphasize we were against euthanasia. The term mercy killing was noted after Sander’s arrest but not part of the trial record. Sander was dropped from Hillsborough County Hospital staff and two Catholic hospitals barred him for life. In Bedford, George Woodbury announced a fund to aid Sander had reached 23000 dollars, turned over to Sander.
Washington faces a potential milk shortage as a three day old wage dispute shutdown closes nine major dairies. The area normally draws about 760,000 quarts daily, with DC institutions and hospitals seeking emergency supplies for babies and the sick. Unionized plants have remained closed since Saturday noon.
One killed and six hurt in a weekend series of Monroe area accidents. James Johnson 23 of Pearl Street died after a Sunday afternoon crash on US 165 seven miles north of Monroe. At Thomas street and Lee avenue, Francis Moss 38 and his family were injured. Moss and two children remained hospitalized, others treated and released. A third crash on Sterlington road sent Thomas Williams 19 to hospital for fractured ribs. Joy Crabtree 18 of Route 4 was cited for reckless driving. David Le was jailed on $400 bond. Johnson died from a broken neck.
Senator probes the Amerasia matter focus on Philip Jaffe editor of the now defunct Amerasia magazine. Jaffe testified in a closed Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee session while others faced espionage related charges. The case, tied to confiscated government papers, sparked charges of whitewash and raised questions over evidence obtained without warrants.
Pittsburgh June 12 Four died and four were saved after a cabin cruiser rode a dam spillway fifteen miles northeast of Pittsburgh. Hull Wright, 50, a riverman hero, died while aiding six aboard. Rivermen and rescue craft battled seven hours amid foaming water as a veteran lockmaster James Woffenden and others attempted to reach the cruiser. The rescued include James McHugh Charles Reilley and Jack Kreig. The deceased also include Mrs. William Fisher Mrs. Carol Kreig and William LaHey Jr.
Budapest June 12 The new bishop of Hungarys largest Lutheran diocese Rev Laszlo Dezsery 36 favors cooperation with the Communist led government succeeding former Bishop Lajos Ordass who was released after a 20 month prison term on currency speculation charges and removal from office. Cardinal Mindszenty remains in prison. Catholic bishops issue pastoral letter urging religious instruction and defending cloistered orders while noting recent actions stem from non official groups. Dezsery was among the youngest bishops and had previously urged conciliation with the government in 1948.
Ninety Nines All Woman Transcontinental Air Race entrants will stop at Selman airport Monroe on June 13. The California to Atlanta and Greenville route began in San Diego Sunday and passes through Tucson El Paso and Dallas before reaching Shreveport. Pilots may refuel anywhere but must overnight at listed cities. Odessa and Charleston serve as purse and pylon points. The race ends Friday at noon.
