West Coast dockers scale wage talks to boost pay
Before talks began on May 15 officials reached a deal to raise the hourly wage by 25 cents for 13 000 dock workers and sailors starting June 1 with protections against layoffs and a 36 hour week. The current rate is 35.10. The 1972 pact had a 72 cent raise retroactive to December 25, 1971 but 30 cents was cut by the Pay Board. Union President Harry Bridges pledged at least a one dollar raise. The 1971 72 strike cost about 2 billion to the economy, including 600 million in grain exports, and was the first West Coast port shutdown since 1948.
