Court Directs Reapportion Case Review

Louisiana Guests From Germany Returning Home

Ten West German storm refugee children and their teacher depart New Orleans by bus to New York and a boat to Germany. Eight children were honorary pages in Baton Rouge. Gov. Jimmie Davis hosted a six week Louisiana visit funded by state donations. The group stayed with German-speaking families in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Shreveport as relief for Hurricane Carla victims. They expect Bremerhaven arrival on June 235.

Testimony On Deficit Set In Louisiana Senate Session

Baton Rouge AP report says the Senate Finance Committee will hear deficit testimony in closed session on Louisiana deficits for the past two years and projected revenues for the next fiscal year. Long Says U S Power Deterrent To Atomic War

Sen. Russell Long warned in a weekend speech that the United States has the retaliatory force to destroy the Soviet Union if attacked. He spoke at the launch of the destroyer escort USS McCloy at Avondale Shipyard near New Orleans, noting confidence in U S strength and a future without war. The vessel, christened by Rep. Arthur Winstead’s wife, measures 371 feet and will feature bow sonar, torpedoes, and remote controlled helicopters.

Four More Bodies Recovered in Yun River Tragedy

In Formosa, police raised the drowning toll to 21 after rescuers found four additional bodies from the trawler Chieh Shin carrying about 50 youths aged 6 to 16. The ship capsized while watching a boat race on Sunday.

Riders Bused to Barracks at Hyannis Camp Edwards

Forty four Negro Reverse Freedom Riders moved to unused army barracks at Camp Edwards Hyannis Mass due to dormitory needs. The group includes 37 children and seven adults with 12 having found work elsewhere and four moving to Boston. An additional group arrived from Shreveport bringing total to 61 shipped here on one way bus tickets.

Hodding Carter Probes Portland as Reverse Freedom Riders Destination

Publisher Hodding Carter of the Delta Democrat-Times says he will investigate whether Portland Maine is the planned arrival point for a Reverse Freedom Riders effort. Clem Stovall, a 25 year old Negro laborer from Noxapater Mississippi, landed in Portland after leaving Mississippi following a white man’s confrontation. He sought Cleveland or Evanston where relatives live, saying fare to Portland was more expensive.
