Philadelphia crowds blocked Chestnut street as three youths drew attention by pointing at a parked sedan sparking traffic. Passersby whispered about lies in the car’s back seat while Patrolman Jim Polk commented on the unusual scene.
Moscow reports the Russian air force has achieved supremacy in the Kuban valley after two months of heavy aerial fighting over the western Caucasus bridgehead. Stormovik bombers are said to strike German troops at will with no losses, prompting observers to suggest reduced German combat output in the region and possible redeployment of Luftwaffe to other fronts. A German counterattack near Rostov to Tagarrog yielded several German casualties, tanks, and planes before being halted by a Soviet counterstrike.

The ruling cited constitutional press rights but emphasized the need for truthful reporting.
Bernice Williams a 23 year old department store employee faces a murder charge for allegedly drowning her newborn in a bathtub. The case rests with a 12 man jury after the defendant refused to testify in her own defense. Prosecution claims three illegitimate births led to the third baby’s death last February. bodies found last April in a hope chest at her apartment store room.
Washington June 11 The treasury moves to collect 3 percent after exemptions from wages and salaries as the pay as you go income tax becomes effective July 1. Employers will act as collection agents beginning July. The first deductions possible from a July payroll period end early in August. The government seeks an additional 16.9 billion dollars in revenue. Buenos Aires June 11 Argentina bans code messages in international radio to embassies and restricts axis access. The move targets German Italian and Japanese embassies, suspending code transmissions while plain language remains allowed.
Edward New, a student from Northeast Junior College and pre flight trainee at LSU, died in a plane crash near San Marcos Texas. His body will arrive in Monroe late Saturday night or Sunday morning. Mulhearn Funeral Home to handle arrangements. He is survived by his mother and father W E New of Leville Mississippi. A second flyer also died in the crash. Mrs New runs the Coleman Avenue Grocery and Market.
Little Rock district announces a contract awarded to Neffend Elder of Shreveport Louisiana for construction of a building and parking area at Monroe Louisiana airfield.
Secretary Hull announced the United States recognizes Argentina's new government led by President Pedro Ramirez. Ambassador Armour delivered notice at 11 a.m. eastern war time, with other American republics likely to follow. Britain also recognized Ramirez's regime today.
Pittsburgh June 11 A judge who apologized for not imposing the death sentence sent Earl Perry 17 to western penitentiary for life for the slaying rape and burial of four year old Theresa Williams in the cellar of her home. Judge G Malcolm McDonald said he could not live with the memory of deciding life or death and noted this crime as one of horror. Perry had pled guilty on the trial's third day.
Allied air units under General Kenney launched a three hour raid on Rabaul New Britain dropping 40 tons of bombs on Lakunai airdrome. Bombs hit dispersal areas starting fires and damaging enemy aircraft while gunners and searchlights battled the low dawn raid. Pilots including First Lieutenant James Murphy and Charles Downer led missions and celebrated birthdays amid anti aircraft fire with all crews reported safely returned.
President Roosevelt at a press conference welcomed Italy’s surrender at Pantelleria and indirectly urged Italy to exit the war. He said the United Nations aim to restore Italy as a sovereign nation, remove Fascist rule, and place it among the European nations after Mussolini’s betrayal and alliance with Germany.
In Fort Wayne Indiana June 1144 counsel for three of five Anaconda Wire and Cable workers faced in federal court on charges of conspiring to defraud the government via faulty war equipment. The company is charged with simple fraud. The government wrapped its arguments as the six defendants enter pleas of nolo contendere to eight indictments.
Washington June 11 Emil Ludwig a German biographer testified before the House foreign affairs committee that Hitler will be assassinated soon likely by the Junkers and generals who will seek friendship with the Americans after his death. He warned that bombing will break German nerves and that complete disarmament and guardianship of Germany are needed after defeat.
The AP reports Colonel General Jurgen von Arnim, defeated Axis commander in Tunisia, held at a British estate mansion as a prison with a War Office notice on the gate. General Ritter von Thoma was the first captive there. tenants continue farming as the two German generals oversee gardens and terraced views amid a quiet estate setting.
Associated Press reports Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek’s armies win new upper Yangtze gains. Chinese troops seize a town near Ichang after an all night battle, 300 Japanese killed, and push into Yingshan. MacArthur’s bombers strike Rabaul, while RAF raids Kalewa and Rathedaung fronts amid monsoon quiet on land.
The greatest Sabine river flood threatened east Texas oil field properties as sandbags and fire walls held back waters. The river rose about a tenth of a foot per hour with a predicted peak near 41 feet, about 17 feet above flood stage. Many homes in the Gladewater area were evacuated as a precaution.
