Colleges Propose Three Year Degrees Amid Draft Tension
A group of 40 to 50 liberal arts colleges plans a three year bachelor program beginning in September alongside the traditional four year option. The plan adds summer coursework to accelerate graduation in 1944 to align with the draft age. If compulsory military service endures, faculties would face year round employment and campus life may shrink with fewer social events and smaller athletic rosters. Some educators remain cautious, favoring the four year course, and calls grow for broader loan or scholarship relief for low income students under the National Youth Administration.

Speed Pilot Boat Raised Upright After Nine Days Submerged
After lying on her side and partly submerged for nine days, the pilot boat Speed was raised to an upright position. The salvage, overseen by Cap tain Moore from New Orleans, used three Ford tractors and siphons to drain the river water and seal leaks with divers assisting. The incident followed a low river level that sank the craft while transporting a heavy barge for the Louisiana-Arkansas Barge line from New Orleans to Monroe. Camp Ki-Ro-Li notes: the second and third sessions will be postponed to August due to lake fill delays impacting troop transport to the city natatorium. 84 boys attended the first week despite no swimming.
