The Louisiana Bar Association begins a two day session in the Ouachita National Bank roof garden in Monroe. President J Zach Spearing welcomes attendees while Monroe officials host receptions and a luncheon follows the morning programs.
Resolutions by the metal trades department of the American Federation of Labor denounce Congress and state legislatures as enemies of organized labor and urge a non partisan fall campaign to elect labor friendly candidates. Rumors say railway telegraphers may be excluded from a third wage cut, affecting about 81 000 telegraphers.
James C. Dunn, president and chief owner of the Cleveland American Baseball Club, died here this morning in Chicago.
City Engineer Reynolds reports May progress on Monroe paving and sewer construction. Allied Contractors Inc of Omaha laid two miles of sanitary sewers at an estimated 19,821.11 dollars. Third Street paving is about 50 percent complete. Pine Street final cost set at 24,707.63 dollars after city deduction. Work is being rushed to minimize citizen inconvenience.
Six unions in each division will hold a preparatory meeting in Chicago on June 24 to canvass the strike vote due back June 23. About 400000 shopmen will vote by the triple barrell ballot mailed to them. Leaders of 1200000 railway workers seek wage gains or oppose further cuts and will appeal to President Harding.
The Ouachita Natural Gas and Oil Company of Monroe plans a ten mile six inch pipeline from Swartz in Ouachita parish to Sterlington to feed a Sterlington gasoline plant. The $50,000 project includes three new wells on Walker lands and use of own crews for construction. The Sterlington plant, built last year for 65,000 dollars, has underperformed due to gas content, and with Swartz gas it could yield about 4,500 gallons daily.
Lawrence Lampier eleven years old who escaped the Louisiana Training Institute was found alive in Layton pasture one mile east of Monroe by Paul Malikowski and his group. He fled to Monroe but was taken into custody by Superintendent W. J. Gill and others. Earlier reports said he was drowned after fleeing with four others in a skiff on the Ouachita River.
The soldiers' bonus appeared on the senate calendar today but with no fixed time for action. Chairman McCumber reported the measure by unanimous consent after an earlier consent attempt failed. Some Republican leaders oppose delaying the tariff bill, while opponents say there are enough votes to pass though the bill’s form may face a tough challenge.

Washington date June 9 The public tariff debate involving Italian Ambassador Ricci drew senate criticism but is now closed for the United States. He conferred with Secretary Hughes and learned the conference has ended the matter today.

F. M. Gates, a federal land appraiser, returns from a ten day inspection through East and West Carroll, Union and Morehouse parishes. He notes improved cotton and corn yields due to recent land parceling to small farmers, mainly colored, creating prosperous homesteads. He cites East Carroll as thriving with over 1,000 homes and better crops, while overall Louisiana shows favorable outlook in Claiborne and Webster parishes.
M. Collins secretary of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce, back from Baton Rouge, predicts opponents will win the legislative fight against the Hammon bill. He cites strong opposition and says the measure is unconstitutional and harms parishes hosting railroads and their assessments.
Belfast dispatch reports Republican forces evacuated Pettigoe taking W. A. Murphy once a captain of the Enniskillen Fusileers and now head constable of the Ulster specials. Three constables were taken and not heard from.
Rome date June 9 Pope Pius has decided to hold the first consistory for the creation of cardinals in November according to Vatican circles.
The Louisiana House Ways and Means Committee rejects the Butler anti racing bill by eight to seven sending it back to the House without committee sanction. Supporters, including Senator Butler and District Attorney Marr, argue the bill targets professional gamblers while Rep Claiborne backs a state racing commission. The handling sparked surprise and tense lobbying as leaders plead for morale and strategy.
All depositors of the Law Savings Bank and Trust Co are urged to attend a meeting at the office of Randle and Shotwell over Swayze's Market at 8 o'clock p m. The notice calls for timely presence to discuss matters concerning the bank.
