Passman Sees Federal Share Rising For $65 Pension
Fifth District Congressman Otto E. Passman said a $65 monthly old age pension could be funded with about two thirds federal support under current law. He noted $35 would come from federal funds and $30 from the state, with a possible move to $42.50 federal and $22.50 state under a new act, as Congress. He stressed pensions are a joint federal state program and cited rising federal appropriations to Louisiana from 1947 to 1956. He aims toward a $75 monthly pension in the long run.

Local Directors Form Scholarship Board for Miss Monroe West Monroe Pageant
Jerry Sugar announced that a board of local educators will administer the $500 Miss Monroe West Monroe pageant scholarship. Members include P B Mangum Paul Neal W W Ward Van Odom. Negro Convict Escapes East Carroll Prison
Arthur James Ferguson, 35, a Black inmate, escaped the East Carroll prison farm Thursday about 5:30 p.m. while working in a field with a gang. Authorities used bloodhounds and spotters but could not recapture him before midnight, resuming the chase Friday morning eight miles southwest of Lake Providence. Ferguson had begun a four year term for aggravated battery on June 5.
