RAF planes knocked out about 15 locomotives in Germany France and the Low Countries during May in intruder patrols aimed at disrupting Hitler's communication system. Fighters fighter-bombers and light bombers flew low and returned with tangled telephone wires and soot from chimneys.
Ten year old William Donner Roosevelt son of Colonel Eliott Roosevelt and grandson of the president dis charged a rifle while playing with Lewis Hutchinson 11 at Mist Valley near West Chester Pike causing the boy's death at Bryn Mawr hospital. The coroner said the bullet pierced lung and liver. Billy was taken into his mother's custody as an inquest is planned.
Washington reports Senate leaders, led by Senator McKellar of Tennessee, moved to advance two major appropriation bills the naval and agricultural supply measures amid debate on confirmation of a $4,500 a year position. The naval bill proposed $9.0 billion for ships and $6.5 billion for naval aviation with 27 642 planes, while the farm bill faced intraparty contention over restored funds for the farm security administration and crop insurance plus added soil conservation payments.
Chicot state park covering eight thousand acres near Ville Platte opened to campers and fishermen with a two thousand nine hundred acre lake. Governor Sam Jones led the dedication attended by thousands, praising future state park expansion and local Evangeline parish efforts.
Washington June 17 The bulk of John L. Lewis half million coal miners returned to pits under a fourth truce as dissension among southern operators signaled a new crisis. Some operators favor negotia tions while others seek WLB adjudication. Near normal production resumed after a six day halt.

Observers reckon the reports may signal German and Italian plans to move into Spain to establish air bases for defending a European fortress. General Franco reportedly offered to seek help if invasions occurred.
A large body of U S troops landed in New Zealand from the United States and, with Guadalcanal veterans, began intensive training for imminent combat. Rear Admiral Theodore Wilkinson said the move signals new blows against Japan. Admiral Nimitz, back in the U S for strategy talks, voiced confidence in a formidable Pacific force by year’s end. In the Solomons, U S dive bombers sank a Japanese destroyer and a cargo ship near Bougainville, while air attacks on Kiska in the Aleutians resumed.

Norfolk, June 7. Eighty four men died in fierce explosions and oil fires after a American tanker and an American freighter loaded with ammunition collided off the U S east coast. The navy said an investigation is begun. Debris showered a coast guard ship a quarter mile away. Seventy six perished aboard the freighter and tanker crews suffered heavy losses, with survivors landed at Norfolk. Deck Cadet W J Leonard and others told how the freighter veered and rammed the tanker, flames engulfed the amidships house, and lifeboats failed before men could escape.
Washington reports that planned price rollbacks will soon extend to coffee as government subsidy payments through the Office of Price Administration expand. Meat reductions average three cents a pound, excluding cured pork, with effects reaching packers today and consumers late this month or in July. Butter cuts of five cents follow last week, part of a $400 million annual subsidy program. Moscow said Russian bombers struck German airfields overnight as Allied air war continues. Soviet counters claimed German losses rose to 752 planes from May 30 to June 5, with 2,821 German aircraft destroyed in five weeks and Soviet losses at 212 fighters and bombers in the week ending Saturday.
