Roanoke Va June 7 Over five thousand machine shop employees of the Norfolk and Western Railroad are out today on a general strike. Trainmen and engineers are expected to join in the next few hours. The strike arose from the discharge of several men at Wilcox West Virginia on Wednesday for alleged insubordination.
President Koenkamp of the Commercial Telegraphers Union, en route to Chicago, says a nationwide strike of union telegraphers will be called on arrival to support Western Union workers in ten southern states who began a strike Thursday night. He noted the strike scope and dates are undecided. Western Union says 710 of its 40,600 employees are union members and that service should not be seriously impaired.
Atlanta June 7 The orders calling out Union telephone operators in Columbia and other points in North and South Carolina were rescinded this morning by a Southern C T U A organizer. Western Union strike figures vary with 10000 claimed by locals and 288 by the company as the fight to finish continues. Linemen in New Orleans also walk out in sympathy with Cumberland Telephone Co. workers.
Washington June 6. Director General John Parrett of the Pan American Union announced at the conference's close that a new epoch in Pan American commercial relations begins with the second Pan American commercial conference. He praised the all American idea valuing Latin America and the United States alike in policy and commerce discussions.
