Shoe Makers Face Possible Price Rise From Production Costs
The OPA may push shoe manufacturers and dealers to absorb new production cost increases, likely raising retail prices. Last December a 4½ percent rise was granted but margins were narrowed, and prices were largely unchanged. Last week the agency boosted retail prices 10 to 15 percent on about a quarter of shoes, mainly those under five dollars. OPA anticipates a 3–4 percent rise for alloy steel, with February tinplate increases discounted to fit the $52 per ton average limit.
