The fleet could land about thirty five hundred Marines in a sudden emergency. State Department backs Gomez on non political US action. In Santiago rebels attack Cobre mines but are repulsed by employees. guards also repel attacks at Punta De Sal near Cobre.
Baton Rouge reports that the Bryant bill will need further amendments and more "extractions" before final passage. Five House amendments tighten the plan with voter approval, open records, and salary limits amid a heated anti lobby debate.
London June 5 J Bruce Ismay told the inquiry he knew others were aboard when he left the Titanic but could not say where passengers were. He admitted not thinking about passengers as his boat departed. Harold A Sanderson of White Star testified large ships cannot carry boats for all aboard.
Senator Burke supported keeping the lobby in the building while Senator Favrot compared the railroad lobby to other lobbies. Senators Byrnes and Rivardo opposed the bill as too vague, but the group otherwise favored reporting it out.
Baton Rouge reports strong support for adopting execution by electric chair with plans to move executions to Angola penal farm. The Stafford bill faces cost concerns estimated around 30,000 dollars, and no expert testimony was provided at the Senate committee meeting. Ladies of Baton Rouge push for the Angola site as a more fitting place for capital punishment.

Manager Charles F Speed announced the Home Telephone Company Ltd will sell its plant to the Cumberland Telephone and Telegraph Company in coming days. The sale, approved by stockholders and local business leaders, will save about 8000 annually by eliminating duplicate service. The Cumberland engineers praised the plant, which serves about 650 phones. Speed plans a two month lake region vacation and future plans remain undecided. Cumberland will centralize service at Grand Street and install a new flash light system.
