The Louisiana House voted to override an unfavorable committee report on right to work legislation as security tightened. The measure would outlaw union shops and allow work without union membership, with backing from AFL-CIO and opposition from business groups.
River Stages New Orleans AP reports the $163.2 million Superdome could be sold as lawmakers push to cut losses. Charles Roemer says offers exist but no cash. Talks of restructuring loom in Baton Rouge while Roemer orders a sale feasibility analysis and reviews exclusive contracts hindering events.
Louisiana closes a 100 year-old Civil War chapter with the death of Rebecca Traylor, widow of Confederate veteran Jerry R. Traylor. She died May 7 in Beaumont, Texas, where she lived with her granddaughter. He died in 1917 after serving in Battery E, 1st Texas Heavy Artillery and the Texas Infantry. Both received Confederate pensions.
Voters return Saturday to choose Monroe Public Works and Streets commissioner for four years. Incumbent Luther T. Harper and retired educator Henry Carroll lead a two candidate ballot after no candidate cleared 50 percent in the April primary. Absentee ballots show 357 votes cast at Ouachita Parish Court House. Previously Harper led with 6,511 votes and Carroll had 5,172 with other candidates totaling 3,684. Election details note turnout expectations, precinct hours, and the city administration change under Mayor elect W. L. Howard.
Washington reports May jobless rate falls from 7.5 to 7.3 percent and wholesale prices rise only 0.3 percent. Labor Department notes 6.9 million unemployed and 87.7 million employed, with farm prices up 0.6 and industrials up 0.1. Officials caution slow gains ahead despite moderating inflation.
The National Weather Service logged the day’s high of 103 degrees at Buckeye Arizona excluding Alaska and Hawaii. The low was 30 degrees at Baker Oregon.
