James C. Petrillo leader of the American Federation of Musicians warned concurrent with the AFL convention that if the Supreme Court upholds the Lea bill the three key network locals in New York Chicago and Los Angeles will switch to local programs leaving small stations musicless. He also threatened to stop recordings and transcriptions if Congress bars collecting royalties. He urged delegates to push for justice while criticizing President Truman and some lawmakers.
Kilian of Highland Park Illinois won a ruling to avoid testifying in the Norris case at Lichfield England where a guardhouse brutality trial unfolds. The court upheld his refusal to answer questions about policies at Lichfield and defense excused him from the witness stand. Norris, a former guard, is charged with beating prisoners as trial evidence notes strain at the depot.
Edward R. Stettinius Jr. relinquishes the U S post at the United Nations to Herschel V. Johnson who will sit on the Security Council. Johnson faces debate on Franco Spain while Stettinius plans rest at Rapidan Virginia pending a quick successor.
The Monroe chapter of the American Red Cross and Ouachita Parish Medical Society announce the opening next Friday of a public blood bank providing free transfusions. It will be the first in the region under the Red Cross peace-time program, enabling civilians to donate as donors register starting Friday.

Tokyo June 4. Chief Prosecutor Keenan opened the war crimes trial branding Hideki Tojo and 25 deposed Japanese militarists as assassins who ruled a treacherous nation. He called Pearl Harbor and other attacks part of a grand pattern and promised individual accountability for murders and attacks, as the court recessed for defense preparation.
Cedric Miller, 19, confessed to killing his father Valerie Miller, 50, a farmer and school bus driver, eight miles west of Florien. State Police and local officials said the slaying occurred after years of alleged mistreatment, with arsenic used in meals and the motive under question. Elmore Miller, 34, cousin, is in custody for investigation.
At Wright Field Dayton on June 4 the Army Air Forces announced 21 new world flight records. Jet propelled fighters and the Lockheed P-8 Shooting Star led with speeds near 500 mph, besting prewar marks set by Major General Ernst Udet. Spaatz noted British jets exceed 600 mph on short courses and plans to challenge that later.
Wille Francis an 18 year old condemned killer who escaped death when the Louisiana electric chair failed will appeal to the U S Supreme Court. Bertrand DeBlanc counsel said the appeal follows the Louisiana Supreme Court ruling and Gov. Davis granted a reprieve until further order. The pardon board refused commuting the sentence to life. Francis killed Andrew Thomas a St Martinville druggist during a robbery.
The Neville High School Alumni Association chose Jack Masur as president at a large Hotel Virginia roof banquet attended by nearly 400. Other officers include Vincent Spagnaro vice president Dorothy McComb Talbot secretary and Edith Walker Lolly treasurer.
New York police launch city wide probe into graft and corruption amid columnist Ed Sullivan charges that detectives took bribes from bookmakers in Manhattan and the Bronx. Mayor O'Dwyer orders a clean up as officials vow thorough inquiry and to uncover other gambling links.
Harold E. Stassen former Minnesota governor and potential 1948 GOP candidate denounces President Truman's emergency labor proposal as totalitarian. He outlines seven points to curb industrial discord urging wage reality, a labor court, right to work, secret ballots in unions, tighter union funding oversight, and early impartial action. Maj. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey, national director of selective service, told Louisiana legislators that America will need an army of one to two million to maintain peace. He warned of self sufficiency and called for readiness, noting postwar strength requires continued effort. Awards were given to Louisiana military leaders for meritorious service.
General Claire Lee Chennault reveals he will head a China relief effort directing air shipments to inland starving areas from Shanghai and Hankow under a Chinese government commission. He spoke at Hotel Frances after a breakfast with ex-Gov James A Noe.

Lt Gov Emile Verret echoed caution while House Speaker Norman Bauer warned against utopian targets and projected tax support would be limited though helpful for teachers pay. Louisiana stood among the highest taxed states in the measure.
Louisiana legislature takes a breather after a heated senate session approving a bill to remove heads of state institutions from civil service and ahead of house debate on an anti closed shop measure. A joint session is scheduled with Maj. Gen. Lewis Hershey to address lawmakers. The senate highways committee plans to consider a ten million dollar parish road bond issue.
United States Reparations Commissioner Edwin W. Pauley returned from a restricted tour of the north to report scant proof of factory equipment removal in the Russian-occupied zone. He cited Soviet denial, noted some evidence of possible intra-Korean movement, and said heavy industry appeared being prepared for permanent use, with skilled labor in short supply and Japanese POWs used in some plants.
