Republican push to weaken voting rights bill in Congress
Republicans seek amendments to extend the Voting Rights Act for five years, allow states to escape coverage under conditions, and grant local courts new oversight. The Butler plan would require a 60 percent minority turnout and five years with no discrimination rulings to escape, while bilingual voting aid would apply to areas with sizable language minorities. The Judiciary Committee has rejected these changes, with full House vote anticipated later in the week.
