Mississippi Vote Endorses Segregationist Delegation

Mississippi Democrats awarded a strong mandate to Jobin Stentis and six incumbent congressmen to press their states rights and segregationist stance in Washington. Stennis, Colmer, Whitten, Williams, Winstead and Abernethy won renomination easily as Negro candidates struggled for votes. The only notable intra party race was for Supreme Court in the Southern District, where Robert Lee Jones defeated Lunsford Casey. Turnout lagged behind expectations amid continued racial barriers and poll tax issues.
