Lou Gehrig Dies After Long Battle With ALS

Lou Gehrig, the Yankees' Iron Horse, died in the Bronx after a two year struggle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. He had set 14 year consecutive games and 34 World Series appearances, plus a Hall of Fame election a year earlier. Funeral plans were announced for early morning services at Christ Episcopal Church Riverdale.

The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 5 to 4 to retake sole possession of the National League lead.
