Secretary Meyer warns that naval leader age must balance mental and physical demands with experience before reaching top command. He urges admirals to gain time in rank to practice as squadron and division commanders and to strive for the highest efficiency in all circumstances to uphold the Navy’s tradition of progress, efficiency and courage.
Secretary Meyer at Annapolis declares the navy must be constantly prepared to protect national interests and maintain peace. He cites a shift to American crews and modernization, noting officers and men now undergo rigorous training in all ship systems to ensure maximal efficiency and fuel economy.
Washington June 3 The Peruvian government indicated its plan to pull its army back from the Ecuadoran frontier on June 4 in a move reported from the capital.
Augusta Georgia reports a 62 mph tornado last night lasting 16 minutes causing historic damage with uprooted trees roofs and dangling wires. Mrs E M Biddle injured as roof collapsed and a boy was blown away near Union depot and remains missing while nearby towns along the Augusta and Southern Railway suffer minor damage.
The Louisiana House debated the income tax measure all day and adopted a resolution endorsing federal constitutional amendment ratification by 77 to 31. The bill now goes to the Senate where opponents predict swift defeat. Several new measures were introduced including salary raises for New Orleans judges and a land labor tax exemption.
The Senate adopted the House resolution to adjourn from Friday to Tuesday so members may travel to Natchitoches for the twenty fifth anniversary of the Louisiana State Normal School. President Aswell extended the invitation and arrangements were made for the trip. A majority of the Senate plans to attend.
Wealthy Jewish Texans will join Jacob Schiff of New York to buy large tracts of land between Galveston and Houston. The project aims to divert immigration by offering settlers land at a low price for colonization.
Testimony in a New York federal trial shows H. O. Havemeyer directed two weeks before his death to take care of the accused refinery workers. Ernest W. Gerbracht testified wages were paid to their families while they were jailed, including Oliver Spitzer whose salary to Mrs. Spitzer continued after his prison term. Gerbracht, the defense witness, said Havemeyer had full charge of the refinery until his death.
Representative Leonidas Livingston of Georgia accuses the New York Cotton Exchange of funding opponents to defeat him in the primaries and back Howard. A Memphis home fire caused by an exploding oil stove killed Mrs. F Harron and her infant child tonight. Fire officials report clothing caught fire and both victims died at the scene or shortly after. The tragedy adds to concerns about home stove safety in urban neighborhoods.
Capt. KB Marston, famed boll weevil expert, studies twelve weevils sent from Coushatta to determine if they hatched in a plant other than cotton. He suspends a bag of the insects on a sunflower to test whether sunflowers produce new born weevils and hopes for a decisive result.
Former Missouri governor Joseph W. Folk unveiled key principles for a 1912 presidential bid at a St. Louis dinner. Baton Rouge June 3 The racing proposition may be presented in a new form to the Legislature within a week proposing that the question of whether New Orleans shall revive racing be decided by a vote of Orleans parish residents. The plan enjoys support from lawmakers and city leaders.
