Pension bill schedule says uncertain fate in Senate

Senate Democratic Leader Lucas said the pension measure is not on the schedule and will likely go to the finance committee, whose chair is ill and away. Republican leaders want study before proposing changes as costs rise. The plan would deem any veteran totally disabled at 65 and allow higher earnings while receiving a pension. The budget bureau estimates costs could swell from 35 to 100 billion dollars over 50 years, with large increases from removing the unemployability clause and other liberalizations. The economy bloc won a victory in the appropriations panel with a tighter next year's funding package for state justice and commerce, but with notable cuts and some increases in contract authority. The committee tightened VOA funding and foreign building plans, and reduced FBI and antitrust budgets. Awaiting Senate action was a supplemental current-year appropriation of about 859.7 million above House totals.
