Calhoun Man Hurt When Trucks Crash
Cleve McDaniel, 60, of Calhoun, was injured early Tuesday when two trucks side swiped on a curve about 10 miles southwest of West Monroe on the parish highway off Jonesboro road. He was taken to St Francis Sanitarium with facial lacerations and bruises after the Parlor City Lumber Company truck and a northbound Chevrolet truck collided. Louisiana House debates tax bills and old age aid plan
Debates over a proposed 5 percent advertising tax draw opposition from lawmakers and press officials who warn it would curb advertising and retail sales. The House readies a $25 million surplus appropriation for the old age assistance program amid broad support, while the Senate advances a veterans bonus bill and judges' tenure and salary increases. Finance panels consider sales, gas, severance taxes, and the nickel beer levy, with amendments shaping final passage pending voter ratification in November.

Tax on beer and gas tax bill sparks Senate clash
The debate over a beer tax and a gas line tax bill drew strong opposition from J Y Koch of AAA and Highway Users Conference who urged a reasonable tax and warned against passing costs to beer drinkers. Other opponents cited highway funding needs and shortages. The Senate then tabled Dudley LeBlanc's resolution probing state local government divisions, including the New Orleans Union Terminal project, by a 25 to 9 vote.

Morrison says cut would hurt Orleans
New Orleans Mayor Morrison attacks Governor Long's plan to halve the city sales tax, saying it would strip the city of essential funds. He notes the state tax rise would shift about 4.5 million from city to state treasury, leaving the city with a 12.5 million budget insufficient for 606000 residents. Morrison defends payroll cuts and rejects using permit funds to cover deficits, stressing the city would still bear a 3 percent sales tax and accusing the plan of being the largest tax package in state history.

NLRB challenges coal pact in bid to restart talks
The National Labor Relations Board filed an answer to the United Mine Workers motion to dismiss arguing the current soft coal contract does not bar signatories from negotiating via agents. The government asserts Taft Hartley policies favor free bargaining and that the Southern Coal Producers Association may not be a proper bargaining agent. Judge Goldsborough set a hearing for today to show cause why an injunction should not be issued. The pact expires June 30 and a walkout could follow if no new contract is reached. The Niagara Falls are receding about five feet a year.
