Atlanta reports a potential nation wide strike of telephone and telegrah employees hinging on the reinstatement of fewer than a dozen girls in the city. Labor leaders claim they were discharged for joining a union while the company cites inefficiency as the reason. The strike would begin this afternoon at o oclock.
J Koneikamp president of the Commercial Telegraphers Union says no date has been set for a nationwide walkout and the Atlanta action is local. Postmaster General Burleson promises reinstatement of phone operators in Atlanta if fired for union ties and seeks discipline for Southern Bell officials.
Washington June 1 Postmaster General Burleson ordered an investigation into the differences between the Southern Bell Telephone Company and its workers in Atlanta Georgia amid talk of a nationwide strike. He asked Union N Bethel to uncover facts while union leaders prepared for a walkout unless Atlanta operators are reinstated.
Mayence reports the Rhine republic proclaimed today with Dr. Dorden as provisional head installed at Weisbaden. Authorities warn that subcurrents threaten unity as Bavaria seeks a working program with parties pledging unity while 20,000 Munich unemployed remain a danger and the Bavarian army is to be disbanded for a national volunteer system.
Seventeen additional warrants for failing to dip cattle as required by law were turned over to Sheriff T. A. Grant this morning. Names include Dick Tolbert Mrs M M Mother shed N E Mathis N E Evans Mrs J H Dozier RB Fitch and others. Several listed last week, including Rob Lewis J A Simpson and J B Simpson, were also served. Bond posted for those warrants last week totaled 100 dollars each.
Washington reports the Supreme Court upholding the postwar rate hikes on telephone and telegraph traffic enacted January 21, 1919 by Postmaster General Burleson. The North Dakota Supreme Court blocked Northern Pacific Railway from enforcing railroad administration rate increases, and lower court rulings allowing pre existing interstate rates as police regulation were set aside.
Juarez June 2 Villa and Angeles reportedly attacked Chihuahua City in force cutting communication between Juarez and Chihuahua City. Telegraph service to Terrazas near the city was also cut after authorities received word of the assault.
California Republican senator denounces the League as a gigantic war trust. He argues the Paris conference cannot amend the covenant to base future war decisions on popular votes rather than established rulers.
Supreme Court sustains contempt rulings against Newberry campaign managers in the Ford Newberry Michigan election contest. The decision reinforces penalties tied to court actions arising from the New York proceeding.
Washington June 2 The Department of Agriculture reports the cotton crop at 75.6 percent of normal as of May 25 with no area planted estimate yet. State readings include Louisiana 75 Mississippi 72.

Austria's delegates at St Germain received terms of peace from the Allies. A new independent Rhine provinces republic has been proclaimed, spanning Holland Belgium Luxembourg fronts and containing major iron and steel centers. Berlin warned last week that backers of the movement are traitors to the Fatherland.
Jergon, staff correspondent for the Times-Picayune, writes from Monroe that the carbon block boom in the Monroe gas field now features six large plants with multi million dollar investment. The plants span Spyker Fairbanks Sterlington Guthrie Lampkin and Wardville and are owned by Southern Carbon Company Oear Nelson Inc Imperial Carbon Company Peerless Carbon Company WE Sterlington and Beacon Carbon Company Wariville. Carbon black serves printers ink tires paints carbon paper typewriter ribbons and other products. New gasoline extraction from natural gas via the absorption system has begun at Spyker and Fairbanks with plans to add similar systems at other plants. Continued on page six.
Mr P D Masur returned from New York to meet his son Edgar who came home on a transport that landed in Charleston. Masur and his New York accompanying daughter found the boy well and hoped he would be mustered in a few days. Capt Green of the Red Cross aided the reunion, with the two hours they shared described as happy.
Austrian delegates arrived for the peace talks amid tense scenes as terms were presented. Dr Karl Renner opened in German denouncing delays and declaring Austria’s public indemnity stance, while representatives from Seeroy Sing and Henry White attended for the United States in the sessions led by Premier Clemenceau.
Paris June 2 Associated Press reports Lord Robert Cecil warned against actions that could mar Americas war record at the Peace Conference. He referenced opposition in the United States to the League of Nations and urged restraint to preserve the nations wartime achievements.
Baton Rouge June 2 The summer school of Louisiana State University opens June 17 and closes July 40 to train teachers of agriculture and home economics for high schools and to prepare workers for agricultural extension service. It will offer courses in agriculture agricultural education home demonstration and home economics.
Baton Rouge June 2 Miss Carolline Boudreaux and Miss Erin Dore home demonstration agents from Leewette Arcadia parishes sailed May 29 to join agricultural reconstruction work in France. They are among the few selected for this mission based on prior French language proficiency and demonstration experience. Boudreaux has served Lafayette Parish since 1913 and Dore has worked with French communities in Acadia Parish. They expect to stay about four months before returning to their farm demonstration posts.
