New Saturn Engine Eyed for More Powerful Rocket
Washington AP reports NASA plans to develop a second stage engine for the Saturn rocket about twice as powerful as the initial unit. Negotiations will seek a 200,000 pound thrust liquid hydrogen engine from Rocketdyne Division of North American Aviation. The Saturn aims to deliver a multiton payload or a soft lunar landing. The first Saturn launch with dummy upper stages is set for mid 1961, with full scale launches unlikely before 1964.
