A West Monroe man William Moward Lott is jailed on two extortion counts and one felony theft count in Ouachita Parish. Police say Lott extorted $350 from Perry Girod, a pharmacist, promising not to publish defamatory information and stealing a TV valued at $150. The TV was recovered from a southside warehouse.

IRON RIVER Mich AP a belching hell of fire swept the Sher wood iron ore mine killing four miners and injuring 27 others. A slope collapse released sulphur fumes and flames trapping 35 miners at the 1200 foot level. The dead were Ingvar Wester 48 of Iron River August Zuckal 1 Caspian Einar Johnson 39 Crystal Falls and Carl Rudy Anderson 40 Iron River father of five. Inland Steel Co owned the mine at Mineral Hills. Keith Sleeman one of the rescue survivors described the deadly rush past him.
