A Bolivian dispatch from Antofagasta states Simon Patino donated 15 airplanes and several million Bolivianos for use if war with Paraguay breaks out over the Gran Chaco. The report says 20,000 more Bolivians will be mobilized Thursday as tensions rise across South America.
Rep Riley J. Wilson, candidate for reelection, issues a statement from Winnsboro on July 30 about the bonus marchers in Washington. He says marchers had been orderly and within their rights to petition Congress, and that authorities must act to restore order if laws protecting property lives and government stability are violated.
A man nicknamed Carlo Sciara damaged his nose practicing the so called Schneider Special dive at the natatorium. He landed on the back of his neck and shoulders when the water contact pressed his head toward his knees. One thousand bushels of D. P. L. No. 48 cotton seed are sold today to South American farmers, closing the Ouachita Valley Pure Seed association’s supply of last year’s planting seed. The group, formed under Ouachita parish agent E. R. Strahan, operates to produce pure, uniform seed for higher yields, with support from LSU Extension, the Farm Board, and the American Cotton Cooperative. Members sold surplus seed locally to about 15 Louisiana parishes at roughly 70 cents per bushel.
President Hoover reorganizes the United States Shipping Board by appointing T W O Connor Samuel S Sandberg and Hutch S Cone to replace the seven member board. All three already serve as directors. The move follows the national economy act and sets a pending transition date.
Washington wires report federal troops to evacuate government property and return to Fort Myer as two days of unrest end. Third battalion of the 12th Infantry leaves billets near the Lincoln Memorial heading to Fort Washington Maryland amid orders to clear Washington.
Gov. O K Allen asks the Reconstruction Finance Corp for a 12 million loan to fund unemployment relief in Louisiana. He creates an unemployment relief committee modeled on New Orleans welfare efforts to disburse funds and aid destitute residents. The committee lists 15 directors from New Orleans Shreveport Monroe and other cities with Arthur Newmeyer named chairman and Charles Stair as vice chairman.
New York July 30 Roosevelt campaign advances as Democratic national chairman Farley reports growing sentiment for the governor in all sections. Farley and Roosevelt confer with Louis Howe and Edward Flynn as preparations begin for an August 20 tour and a new campaign treasurer and headquarters plans.
