Cotton stamps to total about eighteen thousand here
Approximately $18,000 in cotton stamps will be issued in Ouachita parish by the end of August, says Dave C. Silverstein, chairman of the chamber of commerce division. The stamps will buy cotton goods and are separate from government relief. They go to farmers cooperating with the agriculture department to cut acreage, with plans to include relief clients in this area as an experimental section.

Firemen rescue boy from theater roof in ingenious basket lift
A 13 year old boy slid on a water sprayed roof at the Paradise theater after a fall from a 30 foot ladder. Fire Chief Thomas Lynch arranged a canvas basket and pulley system to lower him safely to the ground. He was taken to county hospital for treatment.

The funeral for 35 year old J M Manis formerly of Monroe and resident of Baton Rouge for the past year was held Monday at 3 pm at Davis Lawhead Funeral Home with Rev R T Watson officiating. Interment followed at Riverview Burial Park. He died Saturday in a Baton Rouge hospital after a lingering illness. Information received by C. A. Hunt reports L. F. Fish former department quartermaster of the Veterans of Foreign Wars was found dead at his home in Alexandria. He was known in Monroe where he had attended many times and served during the last department VFW convention held there two years ago. No cause of death was available.

New York July 28 The Battelle Memorial Institute Columbus Ohio reports that adding 0.1 to 0.5 percent bismuth to stainless steel allows machining twice as fast and cuts machining costs by about 25 percent without reducing corrosion resistance or affecting strength. The alloy, sponsored by the Alloy Casting Institute, does not hinder welding, offering a faster handling rate especially in defense manufacture. The reason bismuth hinders cutting remains unclear.

A trapper known as Joseph Schneider and Joseph Modetz, about 55, was found dead in his Tolland cabin near Colorado Central City. His hands were padlocked to a chain and feet roped together. Drowns Near Vidalia Bridge in Summer Tragedy
