Peru’s foreign ministry accused him of helping create a climate of misunderstanding that cut aid, which Loeb denied. Police broke up a 500-student anti-coup rally led by leftist APRA members. Caracas said eight of eleven nations seek a hemisphere foreign ministers meeting on Peru, with Guatemala undecided. Brazil opposed the meeting citing nonintervention concerns.

New York reports a very strong quake about 2,160 miles south of New York near northern America. Rev Joseph Lynch of Fordham University said it measured at least 6.5 on the Richter scale. Suspected Dope Peddler Slain in Harlem Shootout

In Spanish Harlem a suspected dope peddler, 23 year old Luis Rodriguez, threatened a federal narcotics agent and a city detective in a backyard stand off. Gas Explosion Destroys Homes and Church in Berlin New York

A propane gas explosion from a tractor trailer destroyed a dozen homes and a church in Berlin New York. Driver killed and 16 people hospitalized, with eight injuries at Putnam Memorial Hospital and six at Samaritan Hospital in Troy. Eyewitnesses described a massive blast and fiery plume as the vehicle sped down a hill and jackknifed near the village square. At the New York Hilton Hotel construction site a steel cable snapped like a slingshot, flinging Bethlehem Steel workers Michael J. McDonald and Gilbert Saunders to their deaths.
