Three Killed In Pittsburgh Auto Blast

Explosives expert and estranged wife die in a parked car blast in Pittsburgh’s North Side business district. An 8 year old girl licking an ice cream bar is also killed. seven others injured. A 29 year old man and his 15 year old wife are named, with a 11 year old sister among survivors. Police call it murder and death by own action.

Man Wanted For Burglary Held

The Ouachita parish sheriff department plans to return Dee Gray Jr. to Monroe to face burglary charges. Gray, indicted for burglarizing the Borden Company at 2407 South Grand, was captured by Chicago police after tips from local authorities. Bond set at 5000 dollars. Losses totaled 482.58 in cash and 3073.11 in checks during the January 12 night to January 13 morning entry.

Cairo Wedding Hall Collapse Kills Dozens

A five story Cairo building collapsed during a wedding reception killing many guests. Police reported 63 bodies recovered with deaths possibly rising, including at least 34 children. 15 others hospitalized in serious condition. Bride Fatma EL Shimo, 19, survived with her husband Mansour Abdel Hamid injured. Debris halted celebrations amid native music and belly dancing.

Langham Receives Suspended Term for Theft Plea

Thom as Wesley Langham of Monroe was sentenced to three years in Angola but placed on probation after pleading guilty to stealing $110 from a southside service station. He had claimed a hold up, later admitted taking the money and the hold up. The $110 was recovered from a tire at the station.

Fugitive Gunman Clashes With Police In Long Island Burglary

A gunman, after a house burglary at Baldwin on Long Island, opened a safe used for Saturday night deposits and stole money. Patrolman Howard Anderson was wounded during the confrontation after the suspect was surprised in the Baldwin residence and a gun duel ensued with officers.

Plenty Of Water In West Monroe

West Monroe will have adequate water supply this summer after three new tanks added in the past year bring total capacity to three million gallons. Previously a single 100000 gallon tank caused frequent shortages. Water meters in newer sections aided the department.

Legion Votes to Study Hospital Site for Cameron Calcasieu Parishes

The Legion approved the people of Cameron and Calcasieu parishes advancing a hospital project as economically feasible but without a site chosen. The executive committee of the Calcasien Cameron Parish Medical Society will appoint a group to study possible sites and report findings. Albert LaBiche of New Orleans heads the Legion disaster committee. More than 700 Legionnaires and Auxiliars registered for the convention, with more than 900 delegates expected as registrations continued at the Virginia Hotel. Paramount seats were nearly filled.

Missionary speaker to address Central Baptist Church

Mrs Jane McRae southern Baptist missionary to Gaza in the Near East will speak at Central Baptist Church Monarece Sunday. Dr and Mrs J T McRae served as medical missionaries in the Gaza Strip where about 104000 regular residents and a quarter million Arab refugees live. Mrs McRae is sister to Ben Carroll of Central Baptist Church residing at 206 Pershing Avenue.

W. H. Horner 35 Dies at St Francis Hospital

William Harold Horner 35 of 1700 Lexington Avenue died in St Francis Hospital after a long illness. He is survived by his wife Doris and three daughters Mary Kathleen Doria June and Laura Ann Horner all of Monroe. Also survived by his parents Mr and Mrs Mark Horner of Paris Tennessee two sisters Mrs Gordon Green St Louis and Mrs Milo Mahan Ft Worth two brothers Tom Houston and Walter Lafayette and several nieces and nephews. He was a salesman for International Shoe Co and a World War II veteran. He was a member of St Pauls Methodist Church and the ATO Fraternity.

House votes to strike enacting clause of bill

In a 208 to 203 roll call vote, the House adopted Rep. Howard W. Smith’s motion to strike the enacting clause, effectively killing the measure. The White House offered no comment after yesterday’s vote.

Milk Truck And Auto Collide In West Monroe

A milk truck driven by Mrs. Charles Elkins of Rayville failed to stop at North Fifth street and hit a car driven by Mrs. Ruth Coates of West Monroe on Mill street. The impact pushed Coates’ car into Paul Keller Jr.’s stopped vehicle. two children sustained minor injuries and were not hospitalized. The milk truck and cars suffered heavy damage.
