Returns from Louisiana precincts in the Democratic senatorial primary show Sen. Russell Long leading with 337,778 votes, Malcolm LaFargue with 153,181, and Newt V. Mills with 8,422. The tally covers 1,960 of 2,092 precincts reported from New Orleans.
Westbrook Pegler critiques John Gunther and Roosevelt biographer John Flynn arguing Gunther lauds Roosevelt while others doubt, calling Gunther a potboiler and Flynn a fearless historian. He notes the Roosevelt cult limited dissent and mocks the jacket’s praise of Roosevelt.
An American tank corporal, 21, Irish by birth, testified in Korea that he and two bound colleagues were forced to lie face down under a tree before 800 guerrillas fired on them. He escaped with three shoulder wounds after the guards fled upon a fighter planes’ approach.

Wade O Martin Sr a St Martinville Democrat and chairman of the Public Service Commission won re election in the Louisiana second district primary with 92094 votes from 696 of 833 precincts. Opponents included A O Rappelet J F Verret Joseph Blanchard and James Villemarette LeBlanc backed Rappelet in a power clash. Verret opposed the governors anti administration line while Long stayed out of the race.
In Louisiana Democratic primary results, Dr. George S. Long lost in the eighth district to A Leonard Allen after 244 of 366 precincts. Across districts incumbents won, including Hebert in the first and Boggs in the second, with detailed vote tallies from precincts reported.
U S forces reported North Korean troops used hundreds of civilians as a shield for four tanks crossing a bridge during a Yongdong attack. Maj. William O. Witherspoon said American fire was withheld to allow the crossing, with casualties not heavy. The push aimed at the American left and right flanks followed by regrouping near the line as night fell. The enemy then mounted a night assault with infantry through surrounding mountains. The bridge had been mined by U S forces.
U S Senator Russell Long and Representative Otto E Passman led in the fifth district with large margins as 265 of 302 precincts reported unofficial results. Long tallied 33 817 votes for the Senate and Passman 31 570 for the House while Malcom LaFargue and Mills trailed. Ouachita parish totals and ward 3 school board results showed Long LaFargue and Mills with smaller counts and Passman leading in the parish race.

Oklahoma City July 26 Rep Mike Monroney defeated Sen Elmer Thomas by more than 24000 votes in the Democratic U S senatorial runoff. Thomas concedes from Washington as Monroney faces Republican Bill Alexander in November. Thomas had earlier lost in the governor race and Monroney extended his string of electoral wins to seven of eight bids.
London reports Britain will dispatch an effective land reinforcement to Korea including infantry armor artillery and engineers. Defense Minister Emanuel Shinwell said the move supports UN efforts and will be prepared without delay to join American GIs in Korea as soon as possible.
Tokyo dispatch reports central Korea battle lines have stabilized and American strength has built up to ensure the beachhead can be held. The spokesman said the situation amounts to a continuous effort with uncertain factors remaining.
Ankara reports 4500 fully armed Turkish troops offered to fight in Korea. The unit would be trained and equipped with American weapons under U.S. aid and sent as a substantial force.
