Pittsburgh reports a deadly blaze at the Little Sisters of the Poor Home for the Aged. Twenty six inmates including one nun are dead, with 217 hospitalized and 15 unaccounted for. Rescue attempts saved some, but barred gates and a high wall hindered evacuation.
Oak Grove in Northeast Louisiana schedules a free barbecue and all day celebration on Thursday July 30. The Bureau of Mines reports Charles G. Maier of the Pacific Experiment Station devised a natural gas based zinc smelting process that heats ore to about 1000 degrees C and yields 99.99 percent pure zinc. The method uses continuous operation with fewer heat and maintenance costs and reduced labor.
