Absentee voting reported heavy in Ouachita parish. polls open 6 am to 7 pm.
Four widowed women over 70 drove 1200 miles from Shreveport Louisiana to Cleveland for the Baptist World congress. Driver Florence Webster 71 and Addie J Barrow 73, both of Shreveport, C C Kay 71 of Dallas, and Eric Murphy 78 of Snyder Texas, are workers in the Churchs Women's Missionary Union. They plan a Niagara Falls visit before returning south.
Former Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, 82, is reported improving after surgery to mend a fractured bone in his left leg. Doctors Hospital said he has been removed from an oxygen tent and he incurred the injury in a fall July 16 at his Huntington home in New York.

Paul Amiss aged 83, longtime East Baton Rouge parish treasurer, died after a long illness. He was appointed treasurer when the city parish government began in January 1949 and previously served 26 years as secretary of the parish police jury.
