Explosion and fire at a Peoria plant cause two deaths and many injuries. Authorities report the blast, with widespread damage, as investigators probe the cause while emergency crews battle remaining fires and secure the site.
An explosion and fire at the Hiram Walker distillery in Peoria Illinois caused an estimated 2.5 million dollars in damage and destroyed six million gallons of whisky. Two workers, John Barton and William Hulsebus, were believed dead and not located, while about a dozen others were injured as the rackhouse collapsed and flames rose high.
Britain concentrates a swift naval force in the Mediterranean with a stronger presence, detailing an enhanced strength of 80,000 tons. The move signals reinforced maritime power projection as tensions in the region persist.

Federal alcohol tax agent W. R. Braden died from a gunshot after a liquor still raid in Blountsville Florida. An unidentified Black man was killed in the exchange of fire when Braden and two officers confronted workers at the illicit whisky plant. The raid led to surrender demands and a fatal shootout as suspects fled or fired back.
Washington July 23 Representative Fish Republican New York said if President Roosevelt is impeachable then Democratic leaders in the house are doubly so. He charged the house has voted away constitutional functions and cited Snell calling Roosevelt’s actions impeachable. He noted GOP leaders argue with a member over submitting charges.
Texarkana Arkansas July 23 Gov O K Allen of Louisiana backed Sen Huey P Long in a public split with the Roosevelt administration at an oil conference. Allen said Long was absolutely right about Roosevelt and urged the nation to follow Longs lead to get on its feet quickly. He and Lt Gov James A Noe then headed to Atlanta Texas for another oil conference as Long had called Roosevelt a liar in a recent speech.
In Seattle on July 23 a city diaper changing championship winner was W. H. Love, a 29 year old father, who changed his son Jerry in 16 seconds. Women withdrew after demands for a 10 second handicap were denied by the rules committee. Love credited his faster pace to his training and large family.
Officers in Jennings Texas arrested Henry Whitmot of Texas after a local store robbery last night. He allegedly entered with a skeleton key and fled with $3. Whitmot confessed to the entry.
Terre Haute Ind July 23 2000 guardsmen assume control of the city to restore supplies after a general strike. Brigadier General D Wray DePrez commands about 2000 troops patrolling all districts to ensure workers can return. Brewery and dairy delivery men indicate readiness to resume, while unions are involved in the shutdown.

Arthur Flegenheimer known as Dutch Schultz was ordered jailed for the duration of his income tax evasion trial by Federal Judge Frederick H. Bryant. The judge refused to give reasons for the order as Schultz mingled publicly in Malone New York after arriving from Syracuse.
