The Nixon administration revised its food stamp plan to avoid cutting off about 275,000 higher income welfare families while keeping a work requirement for able-bodied adults. The new rules make all welfare recipients eligible, with adjusted benefits for upper income levels and exemptions for health or safety concerns.
The House Appropriations Committee in Washington added 151 million to Nixon administration health requests and sent a 20.36 billion Labor and HEW bill to the floor for next year. Increases cover psychiatric training mental health centers staffing child programs alcoholism control disease prevention hospital construction and NIH research among others.
The National Weather Service reported the nation’s highest temperature outside Hawaii and Alaska as 113 degrees in Blythe California on Wednesday. The day’s lowest temperature was 43 degrees in Evanston Wyoming.
