J R Crawley about 70 of Epps was found dead in bed at his home at 7 a m Friday. A physician attributed the death to a heart attack and funeral arrangements are under Catron Gay Funeral Home of Delhi. He is survived by his wife and several children.

A rice farmer and a 13 year old Jefferson Parish Boy Scout drowned in separate Lake Charles area incidents. George Emile Guillie Jr., son of Metairie residents, drowned in the Calcasieu River near Topsy. Clifford Abshire, 31, slipped into Lacassine Bayou while reaching for a floating barrel. In Ferriday Louisiana a 71 year old Franklin Parish man Albert Kerr shot Police Officer Hershel Bagby in the hand at a Gulf Refining station and then killed himself with a .32 caliber pistol. Kerr died about 3 pm after the incident and a prescription was found on him. Ferriday Police Chief Robert Warren said the case is under investigation and Kerr had family troubles.

The Bundesrat swiftly backs two measures to call up volunteers this year and create a civilian panel to screen senior officers. The bills move to President Heuss for signature and pave the way for a 12 division army, 1300 jet air force, and coastal navy for the Atlantic Alliance.
Floodwaters receded from El Paso and Juarez leaving at least one dead and several missing. About 11,000 flooded from homes with 10,000 in Juarez homeless. El Paso residents in Mountain View surveyed damage as waters dropped, while Laredo faced renewed flood crest and bridge damage. Mexican authorities reported 10,000 homeless and at least 100 homes destroyed.

Mrs. W. V. Ladner of Petal received a five year sentence after being convicted of manslaughter in the fatal shooting of her lover Archie Nobles. The jury deliberated five hours and 21 minutes before the verdict. Ladner claimed self defense citing threats and unwanted advances.
The old south traffic bridge over the Ouachita River at De Siard street in Monroe will shut to vehicles at 7 a.m. Monday for up to three months. Coastal Bridge Co. of Baton Rouge leads a $143,384.12 project to convert the bridge to steel and upgrade the west approach. Pedestrians may cross, one walkway remains open, and parking on Louisville avenue will be banned during peak hours with hours set as 7:30 to 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 4 to 6 p.m.
