A.John J. Mead a 68 year old division state highway engineer died in a hospital after being found shot in his garage. His wife Mrs Julia Mead found him on the floor with a pistol nearby and an unsigned suicide note addressed to her. He had been in ill health for 10 years.
Georgia Governor Talmadge dismissed five members of the Georgia Public Service Commission and announced successors. James B. Perry’s seat goes to Jud P. Wilhoit of War, formerly on the state high board, with other new appointees named to replace outgoing members Walter McDonald J B Daniel J B Knight Albert Woodruff Jule W Felton and T Huet among others.

Washington July 21 Special The Roosevelt administration and Senator Huey P Long reportedly clashed over patronage as Paul B Hadans of New Orleans was named state manager of the Home Owners Loan Corporation. Long and Senator John H Overton had backed another candidate. Hadans sworn in to organize HOLOC in Louisiana with branches planned for Shreveport Alexandria and perhaps Monroe and to appoint parish appraisers and attorneys.
Anti kidnapping drive shows results in several regions, officials state. Cook County investigator Captain Daniel Gilbert says three of four gang members tied to Roger Tuohy of Chicago are linked to the John Factor abduction. Elkhorn police identify prisoners as Tuohy, Willie Sharkey, Gloomy Gus Schaeffer and Ed McFadden. Schaeffer had $1200 in ten dollar bills. Factor was later released.
The Louisiana Rural Letter Carriers association held its annual convention in Monroe with a 10 a.m. opening at Hotel Frances. C. E. Ponder led the first session on the Cherokee terrace after a national anthem and prayer by Rev. E. F. Hayward. Mayor Arnold Bernstein welcomed the group for the city.
Roark Bradford the noted novelist and former newspaperman was granted a divorce in Juarez Mexico from Mrs Lydia Wickliffe Sehorn Bradford. Bradford of New Orleans and Santa Fe now resides in Santa Fe New Mexico and he is a 1927 O Henry Memorial short story award winner.
Wiley Post of Oklahoma resumes his around the world flight from Flat, Alaska, after Joe Crosson ferries a new propeller. Post and Crosson circle over Fairbanks field as Post plans fuel stop for Edmonton, Alberta. Post’s plane had damage from a Thursday night landing. record chase remains viable.
The June census bureau report shows U S cotton spinning operations at 129.1 percent of capacity on a single shift, up from 112.3 in May. Mills ran near or at full capacity, with 25.54 million spindles active and a record 9.299 billion spindle hours, led by cotton growing states with 17.59 million active spindles.
Minneapolis could tap a vast artesian basin beneath the city for a potable water supply at an estimated 3.5 million dollars. Benjamin Drake of the Citizens Artesian Water league urges the city council to authorize work to use this source and end river water intake. He cites a 2,500 square mile water bearing rock formation at depths from 400 to 1100 feet as an exhaustible resource.
President Roosevelt urged universal employer cooperation to raise wages and cut hours, launching a mass reemployment effort under the national industrial recovery act. He proposed a blanket code with 40 hour weeks for white collar workers and 35 hour weeks for factory labor, with minimum wages tied to city size and an August 31 effective date.

Elliott Roosevelt son of the president and Miss Ruth Googins of Fort Worth Texas will wed Saturday in Burlington Iowa. He arrives Friday by plane with sister Mrs Anna Roosevelt Dall who will attend with the bride. The wedding takes place at the home of George C Swinton.
In Columbia Louisiana on July 21 a jury convicted Herman Hooks Turner and Stafford Wells of attempting to rob the Grayson bank and shooting two victims. Turner and Manteris were found guilty as charged while Wells was guilty without capital punishment. attorneys for the defendants were given until July 27 to file motions for a new trial.
Dr. E. Denegre Martin, internationally known surgeon and 42 year New Orleans practitioner, died Friday after a brief illness. He was 70 and emeritus professor of surgery at Tulane University. Survived by his widow Marguerite Fischer and seven children from a previous marriage.

Four people from Tupelo Iuka and West Point died when their car left a bridge eight miles north of Okolona and rolled 30 feet into a creek. Winston Jordan of Iuka led the party en route to Tupelo after a swimming and dancing outing. Rachel McShann Ernestine Caldwell and John Rabel also perished. Jordan, the likely driver, planned to start a bridge project soon. Rabel was the son of J. T. Rabel.
New Orleans July 21. The Sykes Brothers Ripley steamship Quistconck sailed loaded with 13 000 bales of cotton destined for Leningrad. It is the first American ship to carry a gulf port cargo directly to Russia since the Soviet republic’s establishment. The shipment, 70 000 bales, is financed by the Reconstruction Finance Corporation as part of a Russian government purchase.
