A garbled Labor Day special edition circulates amid accusations of union pressure and intimidation. The narrative alleges unions and a loan-focused treasury at the center, with workers and employers targeted to buy space for goodwill and propaganda.
Interior Secretary Ickes told New York executives that failures in the war effort rest on businessmen drafted for the campaign rather than on brain trusters or New Dealers. He praised the drafted men while noting clashes and new hands unfamiliar with government procedures have slowed progress.
J and Mrs W A Butler of Bastrop learn from the War Department that their son William P Billy Butler III died as a prisoner of war held by Japan in the Philippines.
