Ken Deshotel and Dutch Schoenberg visited Monroe in ATG SNJ navy planes from New Orleans while Bob Christopher returned to Crescent City with colleagues after visiting relatives nearby.
In Carthage Mississippi deputies arrested Hartness Flowers 26 for in a gunfire incident that wounded two white men. His brother James Flowers 24 was arrested yesterday and is held. Martin Flowers was released after protective custody and has left the county. Hartness says they never meant to hurt anyone. A blast shock wave note appears at end.
Lt Col Luther A Jones and Capt Jasper A Rodden announced the air reserve flight training will move from five to six days a week effective immediately. Thursday becomes the sole non flying day, allowing more flying time and greater aircraft access for reservists. The Monroe air reserve unit will go on active duty Sept 5 with the Eighth Air Force at Carswell Base Fort Worth Texas.
Eight area students completed 35 hours of flight training this week and passed tests to become licensed pilots. Recipients include W. W. McAfee, George Evanoff, E. C. Hammons, F. A. Duffey, C. F. Moore Jr, W. M. Williamson, John B. Garland, and Norman H. Knox Jr. The Monroe area saw scattered showers hampering flying with cross country flights and solos kept to a minimum. Several students soloed for the first time.
An air base manager known as Doc Cole arranged a flight for a friend to Shreveport. The unnamed passenger arrived for takeoff, found a young woman piloting, hesitated briefly, then buckled up and took off.
Night of heavy gunfire preceded a move by Israeli forces including Hagana sixth brigade Irgun Zvai Leumi and Stern group on the old walled Jerusalem. Irgun units breached the enclosure engaging in three hours of house to house fighting before withdrawal. Four attackers killed including Joe Conn a US citizen from Los Angeles. A cease fire deadline neared as Arab fire continued with shells striking central Jerusalem and the Pantiles hotel damaged.

James Parker Spillers 22, native of Monroe, earned a bachelor of science in geology from the University of North Carolina on June 7 and will join Cannon Oil Company in Persia in about two weeks. Son of Mrs. Jackie Walker, he attended Ouachita Parish High School, served 21 months overseas, and was at Pearl Harbor during the attack. He earned his high school diploma in New Orleans and is a veteran.
El Dorado Arkansas July 17 194? B Allen Hancock 76 a longtime peace officer and Union County sheriff 1921 1924 was burned to death when a fire gutted his home. Mrs Hancock escaped through a window. Cause undetermined fire spread rapidly from an attic fan. Survived by wife a brother and a stepson funeral planned Sunday afternoon.
