In a three hour clash near Plaine des Jones southwest of Saigon government troops killed about 187 Viet Cong with total estimates around 200 dead over the weekend. Government losses were 12 dead and about 60 wounded as rebels fled toward the Cambodian border carrying many dead and wounded.
The Senate Judiciary Committee approved Spottswood W. Robinson III and Erwin N. Griswold for the Civil Rights Commission by 7 to 4 with Southern members voting against. Bert I. Bernhard was also approved as staff director. Eastland will oppose all three nominations in the Senate.
CAPT Thomas C. Scruggs of West Monroe is appointed Monroe area representative for the state Civil Defense Agency Brig Gen Francis A Woolfley announced Scruggs will retire from the Air Force July 31 He is stationed at Chennault Air Force Base Lake Charles and will complete staffing of the Monroe area.
The Associated Press reports 11 white youths were arrested during a second weekend of integration Wade-Ins near a Chicago beach. Police said no charges would be filed immediately. A 19-year-old was subdued after kicking an officer. No violence occurred between races.

A woman stepped from a Third Avenue hotel window onto a fifth floor fire escape and sang and danced for about 30 minutes. Her costume blocked traffic for blocks and drew a crowd before police, who arrested her, took her to Bellevue Hospital for psychiatric evaluation. She gave the name Connie Jefferies, 36.
The House Ways and Means Committee backed an 8 percent tax cut on equipment spending for business and self employed, part of a Kennedy administration tax revision. In Bakersfield California a man fatally shot Joseph W Vilek 27 of Fontana as his wife Irene 24 was beaten and left unconscious after an attempted rape. Their two young sons slept aboard their 14 foot cabin cruiser until an armed man demanded money and opened fire. Police later learned a truck driver found Mrs Vilek and notified authorities.
Air Force Capt. Virgil I. Grissom was chosen to pilot the United States second manned spaceflight. The 35 year old Purdue graduate, nicknamed Gas, stands 5 feet 7 inches and weighs 155 pounds. If Grissom cannot fly, Marine Lt. Col. John H. Glenn Jr. would assume the mission.
Sen. Barry Goldwater says he bears no personal ill will toward Nelson Rockefeller but would not join him on a 1964 GOP national ticket. Goldwater questions a party platform pairing Chicago federal aid to education with California opposition. Rockefeller advisers debate whether he should speak out nationally or stay silent to avoid a re election angle.
