New Orleans AP report shows Mary Lou Winters and Louisiana party chairman Jesse Bankston planning to meet Gov. Edwards to urge him not to speak for the nomination of California Gov. Jerry Brown. Edwards contemplates tossing Brown or seconding another delegate. Nineteen of Louisiana's 41 delegates remain unecommitted.
Monroe Mayor W L Jack Howard announced Air One, the police department airplane, is grounded pending a review of the city's finances. He also halted the Zoo Education Program as part of belt tightening, noting costs include two salaries and maintenance totaling 900 dollars. Officers assigned to the plane have been reassigned to regular shifts. The zoo outreach is to be temporarily curtailed though commitments will be met. Final decisions on both programs will come later as essential services require revenue cuts.

Louisiana Democrat Fred Huenefeld Jr. travels to the Democratic National Convention in New York City and says his trip will cost about 1500 dollars, a price he accepts to work for party platform changes. Monroe Republican Bill Moran attends the Republican National Convention in Kansas City, covering his costs and asserting delegates can influence candidate and platform. Moran says his trip cost is not yet estimated and the party will not reimburse expenses. Both see convention participation as a chance to push their causes and fight for their party's position.
Finance Commissioner Harlan Prestridge will form a Civic Center Citizens Committee to examine the Monroe Civic Center operations. The panel will access all records and consult city auditors if needed to ensure accountability and detect possible mismanagement including past debts and ad commission proceeds. The move follows former director Irwin Ellis resignation amid accusations and counterclaims from Mayor W Leon Howard.
