In a dispatch from Iwo Jima, the New York Herald Tribune reports that Rear Admiral Toshinosuke Kimaru wrote to the late President Roosevelt claiming Japan would not surrender and accusing the United States and Anglo Saxons of sacrificing others. The note, released by navy censors, states Kimaru later died by his own hand, though his body was not recovered as of April. The letter condemns perceived white supremacy and criticizes Pearl Harbor as propaganda.

One hundred agents of the federal alcohol tax unit were ordered to launch a three state drive against sugar diversions from New Orleans and gulf coast cities to illicit whisky makers in north Georgia. In Media Pennsylvania a 44 year old grandmother Anne Jaffrey is jailed on murder charges in the death of 22 year old Sandra Lee McCann. Autopsy found a broken neck and cerebral hemorrhage after bruising and suspected abuse. The mother Roberta McCann was traveling to Media.
The War Labor Board set an 8 a.m. deadline for striking Newspaper and Mail Deliverers and Detroit dairy workers to return to work, but no unions or members reported. The Detroit Creamery strike, part of a nationwide stoppage, disrupted about 30 percent of the city’s milk deliveries and endangered half a million people’s supply. Local CIO United Dairy Workers leaders planned a vote on returning to work, while officials urged an end to the walkout today.
