Rock Island requests permission to abandon permanently 3.5 miles of track between Newport and Jacksonport Arkansas. The line is damaged beyond profitable repair after floods and would require about 30000 dollars for restoration, which the railroad says is unjustified by business prospects.

Stanley Thompson a 50 year old Antioch Illinois constable shot dead Ralph Burnett of Chicago in a lovers lane gunfight two miles west of Antioch. Thompson fired after Burnett wounded him then attempted to flee. Deputies hunted Burnett's male companion and two women seen with them while nearby witnesses recalled a woman screaming as Burnett forced a girl from the car.

A new high density cotton compress in Lake Charles is to begin operations by August 1, prompting faster rate readjustment.
