Texas voters face a close election two weeks from Saturday to decide the seat held by Bailey. Rebels and opponents marshal campaigns as reforms and party lines shape the contest.
In Austin on July 11 the Texas Democratic primary nears, pitting Congressman Morris Sheppard and Choice Randell against Col. J. F. Wolters for the Senate seat of Joseph Bailey. Prohibition and tariff policy split factions, with Sheppard aligning with Bryan and radical elements. Wolters drawing moderates and business groups. The governor's race also runs hot as Colquitt seeks another term.
A renomination battle centers on Judge W F Ramsey of the State supreme court as the sole opponent. Ramsey, a prohibitionist leader, seeks unified support from prohibition advocates for the governor nomination. Campaigns for senator and other state offices feature extensive speaking tours as leading candidates push to energize voters before primary day.
Atlanta July 1 The Alexander substitute for the Tippins liquor bill passed the Georgia House by 129 to 42 after days of debate. It tightens the original measure, bans drinks over half of 1 percent alcohol, targets locker clubs, and threatens perjury prosecutions for club officials. The bill goes to the Senate. veto risks exist.
C. M. Shugart, collector for Hutchinson Brothers, was attacked by a negro, Geo. Young, in Travis street as he collected a piano payment. Shugart received serious head wounds from a glass pitcher but Dr. Hands said the injuries may not be dangerous. Young is jailed on assault with intent to murder. Shugart, formerly of Monroe, worked for the Kaliski Music Company.
Special to News-Star Baton Rouge July 11 The Butler Act would relieve Monroe of paying three mills for parish schools and faces final passage this afternoon amid doubt over two thirds Senate support and possible gubernatorial opposition.
Mrs. Josephine Henning testified before the grand jury that the $25,000 suit filed by her husband John C. Henning against Clarence S. Funk was a conspiracy to retaliate against Funk for his testimony in the Lorimer Helm investigation. She denied knowing Funk, said the suit was a frame-up, and described payments received through an attorney or his agent, with travels to Mobile, New York, and Atlantic City linked to the case.
General Pascual Orozco Jr arrived in Juarez and predicted the revolution would continue to overthrow President Madero. He kept plans secret and assured foreigners would not be harmed.
Senator Lorimer began his speech defending his right to a Senate seat as Senator Reed of Missouri delivered a bitter attack. The vote on Lorimer’s seating was expected the next day.
Seattle witnesses testified to Judge C Hanford's alleged drinking and intoxication patterns at an afternoon session of the House Judiciary Subcommittee. Adella Parker and L. H. McMahon described incidents of apparent intoxication and sleep during court appearances, with other attorneys offering varying accounts.
President Taft conferred today with chairman Hilles and Representative McKinley in Washington focusing on party issues and reform efforts.
Representatives Burke of South Dakota and Moore of Pennsylvania clash over whether a Republican ticket elector can vote for Roosevelt on a third party line. Associated Press reports Speaker Clark will meet Governor Wilson at the Little White House in Seagirt on Saturday afternoon. Representative Underwood plans a visit next week and Mr. Bryan is expected later in the summer.
Atlantic City July 11 Prohibitionists clash over who will be permanent chairman. Insurgents back W. G. Gatherwood of Indianapolis and push for a recess into late afternoon. Resolutions committee reports a platform calling for a single six year presidential term.
Washington reports another fetal case of bubonic plague from San Juan to the public health service. Thirty four cases and twenty two deaths on the island have been reported to date. In Havana five hundred rats from infected districts have been killed where bubonic germs were discovered.
In Baton Rouge on July 10 the administration faced a setback as a Senate vote denied suspending the rules on a house bill to exempt Monroe from a tree mill school tax. Senator Hood led the measure opposing the governor while George Wesley Smith opposed the suspension. The majority failed to block the bill but the rules were eventually suspended.
Mr. Q T Hardtner of Urania is described as a guest staying at the Monroe hotel today.
A deputy was abducted and forced at gunpoint into nearby woods where he was threatened with death before escape or rescue. The incident prompted a manhunt and police investigation, with questions about suspect motive and location.
Andrew E. Denovit and Will Collins are jailed in Lake Charles charged with abducting Deputy Sheriff Will Grantham from Galloway Lumber Co. mill. Grantham says six men forced him into the woods at gunpoint. five more suspects and 15 warrants target local union leaders amid unsettled labor tensions and rumored strikes at nearby mills.

Leche is a close governor adviser and could head the oyster industry according to friends. Wille Monnadsville W Va July 11 miners die in Panama mine gas blast rescue teams at work.
The State department signed an extradition treaty with Honduras, closing the last refuge for fugitives from justice in the Western Hemisphere.
Des Moines Iowa July 11 Progressive Republicans meet to nominate a state convention on July 24 and select delegates to the Roosevelt convention in Chicago on August 5.
