Davis of Clarksburg A Legal Figure and Democratic Leader
John W. Davis born in Clarksburg on April 13 1873 rose to prominence as a lawyer and public servant. He studied at Pantops Academy Washington and Lee University and earned a BA in 1892 and LLB in 1905 before returning to practice with his father. Davis served as Judiciary Committee chair in the West Virginia Legislature and later represented the state at the Democratic National Conventions of 1904 and 1908. In 1918 President Wilson selected him to negotiate with Germany on war prisoners and post armistice diplomatic matters. He led the U S delegation to Berne and was offered the ambassadorship to Britain, which he accepted. Davis later presided over the American Bar Association and held memberships in several fraternal groups. His marriages produced two daughters Julia and Ruth.
