Baton Rouge July Senate Finance Committee votes 7 to 6 to strike the Fontenot administration refunding amendment opening court review to disputed state debt such as Baby Bonds and Coupon No 12, keeping focus on an eleven million dollar debt. Lieutenant Governor Barrett and opponents argued the move would reopen old carpetbag era obligations and risk repudiation of state judgments. R. E. Milling and Leon R. Smith led the debate citing past agreements and legal steps to recover alleged stolen bonds. The committee then adopted the Leon R. Smith amendment and reported the Smith bill favorably.

Boston reports one death and ten prostrations. Philadelphia records three deaths and three additional self inflicted fatalities, with thirty one heat deaths in the past week.
Across major cities eleven deaths reported in Philadelphia from heat prostration as temperature hits 95 degrees in a fifth day of heat. Similar tolls come from Chicago Boston and Pittsburgh with dozens of prostrations and multiple fatalities across the region.
Temperature reached 98 degrees as mill workers faced extreme conditions forcing many men to quit early. The harsh heat intensified labor, with crews struggling to continue work amid the oppressive conditions.

A pitched battle on a T. B. Gilbert farm four miles east of Wisner on Bayou Macon left three black workers from Mississippi dead and a mule killed. Collins and Newman exchanged shots with the laborers, no other injuries reported. The incident occurred yesterday in Winnsboro, Louisiana.
Governor Wilson attends accumulated state affairs in Trenton and will meet Samuel Gompers and AFL officials this afternoon as part of a day of state business and labor discussions.
