Prisoners' escape attempt ends in self destruction
In Birmingham Alabama Richard Carrafon 24 and Wesley Vincent 19 attempted to escape from the Jefferson County jail by seizing a warden and firing. Carrafon shot himself after the alarm. Vincent fainted beside Carrafon’s body. Both were condemned to the electric chair for slaying Patrolman F J Harris during a nightclub holdup at the Pickwick club on January 30. The pair were the first white men sentenced to death in the county in over two decades.
