Baton Rouge July 7 The 1938 session nears close as the House kills liquor sale to women and liquor cigarette ads bills while vetoing others. Senate passes several House measures but the House, with few Senate bills remaining, does not act. pay of state employees raised five cents an hour.
John L. Lewis warned of civil war against unionization as 500000 steel workers push to join the Amalgamated Association. He named J P Morgan and company and other bankers as potential lawbreakers and said megacorporate forces would be held to account for illegal acts. The Wagner Act dispute looms in courts as organizers press ahead.
The National League defeated the American League 4 to 3 in the fourth annual All Star game at Park, Boston, with a sparse crowd near 30,000. Schoolboy Rowe gave up two runs in the fifth after Bob Grove surrendered a similar tally in the second. Hubbell allowed two hits in three innings while Dean blanked the Americans for three frames.

Governor Leche signed the severance tax bill boosting natural gas to three tenths of a cent per thousand feet and sulphur to 2 a ton. The list includes 122 acts with appropriations for scholarships, cemeteries, parks, police, and public services. Six bills were vetoed and several new offices and salaries established.

Defense plans to call two fellow inmates to attest to his injuries from an April jail visit. He is charged with drowning Mary James in a life insurance scheme after a rattlesnake attack.
The body of Lionel Champagne a sugar planter was found in his cane field at the Gold Mine plantation in St John parish about 30 miles above New Orleans. He had buckshot wounds and appeared to have been killed last night. Sheriff William Duke sought a suspected farm laborer Clarence Boone and cited a 9 year old daughter who said Boone fired the shotgun near his estranged wife’s cabin before fleeing.

The U.S. Education Department announced that states will receive nearly five times more vocational education funding under the George-Deen act starting July 1. Fiscal year allocations rise from 24 thousand to about 3.08 million, with annual similar allocations through 1942, and require states to match nearly half of Smith-Hughes funds.
