Two Black inmates, Eugene Sales age 39 and Louis Pettin age 24, escaped from the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola between 1 and 2 a.m. Guards with bloodhounds searched the 18,000 acre grounds. Sales had a 6 year sentence from West Baton Rouge Parish for burglary. Pettin a 5 year term from Shreveport for simple burglary and parole violation.
Khrushchev and Nina visited the U.S. ambassador's Moscow residence for a 90 minute Fourth of July style gathering. He spoke warmly of inviting Thompson family to his dacha and joked about weapons.
