A U S army recruiting motorcycle unit arrives in Bastrop on Friday at 10 am for a two day stay. Roswell Field New Mexico based B-29s will assemble over Monroe with Major Ralph Taylor Jr commanding "Luke the Spook" during a patriotic flight for the Vicksburg celebration. Taylor, 26, son of West Monroe residents, served with the 509th and helped in the Hiroshima Nagasaki missions.
The Associated Press reports sunny weather and nationwide celebrations including fireworks, parades and beauty contests. In Vicksburg Mississippi the city marks its third Independence Day with General Eisenhower leading the parade. Flagstaff Indians plan three days of events, and a giant Coney Island fireworks show sponsored by the New York Daily Mirror and the First Army is expected to draw about 2.6 million people.
Paris reports 22 nations will be invited to a July 12 Paris gathering to discuss a European reconstruction program tied to the Marshall plan. Austria Turkey Albania Ireland and former enemy states excluding Germany are named. Spain may be excluded for now.
A July Fourth field day program organized by the Monroe Recreation department under director Jack Hesketh will be held at Neville stadium. A two mile marathon starts at 9 15 a m from the recreation center with twelve boys ages 13 to 19 entered and prizes donated by local firms.
New York police detained Joseph M. Cates a 34 year old laborer on felonious assault charges after he threw hot water from a second story window onto children playing in the street. An 11 year old girl suffered first degree burns and was treated at a hospital.
The Ford Motor Co. dropped recognition of the Foreman's Association of America after a six week strike by 3,290 Ford supervisory workers. The company called the independent union experiment a failure and urged striking workers to return without discrimination. The F A A. criticized Ford’s stance as consistent with its handling of unions.
Four nations Poland France Italy and Czechoslovakia face pressure as Moscow opposes the Marshall plan. Poland seeks relief despite Soviet control, France risks domestic instability if Communist opposition grows, and Czechoslovakia leans toward Moscow forces amid the European economic program dispute.
John L. Lewis presses toward a record wage agreement with eastern miners and steelmakers as UMW vacation ends next Tuesday. Tentative terms include a 44 1/2 cent hourly raise, with industry-wide implications and possible expansion to steel and related costs.

Detroit July 2 damage officially estimated at 160,000 was the aftermath of a blaze at Chrysler Corporation main plant in Hamtramck. Firefighters from Detroit Hamtramck and Highland Park fought flames over two hours, the fire confined to the top floor of the nine story building as the blower system in the body paint department failed.
Ex Congressmen Andrew J. May and munitions officials Henry and Murray Garsson were found guilty of bribery and conspiring to obtain favors from the War Department during World War II. Jurors deliberated 1 hour 50 minutes, verdicts read after a brief delay. trial featured promises of appeals and motions.
Washington July 3 Senate Republican leaders cleared the 4 billion income tax reduction bill as the House ways and means committee delayed voting for hours. Taft of Ohio said the Senate will take up tax legislation after a unification measure, contingent on House passage. The date shift to January 1 from July 1 is noted. House expects approval next Tuesday amid Democratic calls for study.
The United Steelworkers Union announced a triple plan to disregard the Taft Hartley Act. They will not recognize the new labor board, avoid no strike obligations enforced by lawsuits, and refuse to comply with political activity limits.
Portland, July 3. A radio ad salesman Donald W. Bell and Russell W. Elliott were booked on murder charges in the slaying of Orein D. Hooper a federal court stenographer. Hooper disappeared June 14 and was found in a sandpit grave. Bell led investigators to the grave after saying Elliott struck Hooper.
